The redesigned self-checkout kiosk
Key characteristics

Redesigned kiosk

  • Receptacle for scanned items - Shoppers place all scanned items in a large, shallow bin, instead of small square plates, as in the existing design. This allows ease of unloading and packing, while ensuring that all items may be weighed for security purposes. This bin is located adjacent to the shopper, so that s/he can keep an eye on the items purchased.
  • Accommodates use of personal shopping bags - Since packing is done after payment is completed, this system accommodates users who bring their own shopping bags. A generous packing area is provided.

The overall system structure is preserved, but the following key changes are proposed:

  • SCAN-PAY-BAG: a smoother process - Users scan all items first, then make payment before bagging anything. This flow is less disruptive and allows for a quicker checkout process.
  • Basket countertop - The conveyor belt is removed, since it's pretty much unnecessary. It is replaced by a shorter countertop where a shopping basket may be placed. Saves energy!
  • Friendlier - a character is introduced to add a face to the machine, and allow a more personable interaction.
  • All-in-one payment module - The payment module faces the user on the right, so it's more obvious. All payment related functions will be located in this panel, including ATM PIN pad, credit card swipe, signature pad, bill/coin slots, change release, receipt and coupon collection. Little red LED lights blink at the appropriate stage to indicate where attention should be focused on, or where action is required.
  • Sleek curves and casing - The paneling is made of shiny plastic, for easy maintenance and an updated modern look.
  • Clutter-free - No confusing signs on this machine!
